Hampton Roads Landscape Maintenance

Most home owners in Hampton Roads do not have the time to spend hours on their landscape maintenance. That's why we offer our landscape maintenance services. Landscape maintenance can add tremendous beauty to your property, and give you the satisfaction that your lawn is being cared for properly.

The Lawn Barber knows that weed control, mulching, shrub and hedge trimming and seasonal color are important for proper landscape maintenance in Hampton Roads. That's why we offer all four of these lawn care services. Landscape maintenance is an art that encompasses all four of these services. Read about these landscape maintenance services below.

Weed Control

Weed Control

All undesirable plant material growing in mulch beds are controlled by mechanical or chemical means. For all chemical applications, a licensed technician applies a non-selective herbicide to the leaf of the undesirable plant, causing it to wilt away within 1 – 2 weeks. Any undesirable plant that is close enough to a desirable plant and cannot be treated chemically without the risk of also treating the desirable plant will be manually pulled. Please note that mechanical means of controlling weed is more costly than chemical means due to the additional labor that is required.

Mulching

Mulch is the easiest change you can make to enhance the appearance of your landscape. Properly applied, mulches are a labor saving device for the Virginia gardener. A layer of mulch will help prevent the germination of many weed seeds, reducing the need for cultivation or the use of herbicides. Mulches also help moderate the soil temperature and retain moisture during dry weather, reducing the need for watering. Mulches protect the soil from the impact of raindrops that can cause crusting. Crusting can prevent the germination of seedlings.

Mulching

Applying mulch is much more than just spreading the mulch out. Proper mulching begins with site preparation. Choosing the proper mulch for the site and application is just as important. The Lawn Barber uses only the highest quality treated hardwood mulches in our landscape maintenance.

After our crew has properly prepared the site, the mulch variety chosen for the job will be applied to maintain a depth of 3 – 4 inches.

Unless otherwise instructed by the client, all mulch applied around trees will mounded in a "volcano" style being sure not to build the mulch up more that several inches around the trees trunk. Aside from this being aesthetically pleasing, functionally it helps to collect water and direct it towards the tap root of the tree.

All open mulch areas, as well as beds that abut structures (i.e. houses, sheds, fences etc.) will have the mulch applied true to the topography of the landscape and or the structure to leave a uniform and level appearance.

All mulch around traditional ornament shrubs will be laid approximately 1 inch at the base of the shrub, being careful not to mound it up around the shrubs trunk. Having too much mulch mounded around the base of a shrub makes it more susceptible to disease, which will harm your landscape maintenance.

Ground covers that have open areas will be mulched in. Where the ground cover is too thick, mulch will be faded into it.

Plants that require roots to be revealed (such as iris) will have mulch faded into them. This will improve the quality of your landscape.

Areas which have been redefined will have mulch faded into the defining edge of the bed. Along with the appearance of a more manicured look, this technique also prevents the mulch from eroding into the "non mulch" areas.

All mulch residues on areas mulch is not desired (sidewalks, driveways, grass etc.) will be removed.

Seasonal Color

Planting annuals is a great way to help add color to a landscape during the hot summer and cold winter months. With so many options and color varieties to choose from, the life of the landscape is limited only by our clients imagination and budget. We use nursery grown annuals to ensure our clients receive the best quality, longest lasting plant. Most of our 6" annual pots start at $4.00 each. This price includes the plant, soil amendment, and labor to install. Call us today to see the availability of our seasonal color.
